Week of Apr 1

What to say about The Crying Game that hasn't already been said? A film can be a landmark in trans representation and appallingly regressive at the same time --problematic AF, if you will. The film screens at the Academy Museum Wednesday night. If you haven't seen it, do some reading before you go (don't worry, the "surprise" has already been spoiled by years of parody and reference).

Emily St. James, a trans media critic, wrote a great piece on contextualizing problematic work for Vox that talks in passing about The Crying Game.

Also problematic, but in a different way, at the Academy Museum this week are two nights with John Waters in person: first with Pink Flamingos (sold out) on Saturday and then his first two shorts on Sunday.

And to jump forward to today, don't miss one of many appearances from the seemingly inexhaustable Vera Drew, promoting her trans take on certain copyrighted pop culture vigilantes:

The People's Joker

April 12 & 13 @7pm, Landmark Nuart
Writer/director/star Vera Drew in person

April 19 @ 9:45pm, Vidiots
Writer/director/star Vera Drew in person

This parody of a certain caped crusader through the lens of trans creator Vera Drew was quick to disappear after its premiere at TIFF, due to rights issues from an unnamed giant media company. Why so serious?
