Oscar Month: Nyad, Rustin, Nimona

The Oscar nominations have been announced, and while the voting is open, Oscar contenders will be taking up every screen they can in LA to campaign. So find what Queer films you can and look forward to our usual variety after the awards are handed out on March 10.

This year marked a few historic nominations, including Jodie Foster (Nyad) and Colman Domingo (Rustin) marking the first time two out Queer actors were nominated for playing Queer characters. The queer-themed Nimona is also nominated for Best Animated Feature (all three films were produced by Netflix).

Feb 8, 7pm - Special Q&A with Todd Verow and Guillermo Diaz

This 1990s cruising serial-killer thriller from kicks off a special weekend LA engagement with a very special Q&A with the director, star, and other cast members. You Can't Stay Here follows this special screening with a limited special engagement, with additional screenings introduced by the filmmakers.

Celebrate Los Angeles LGBT History

Feb 9, 7pm - Philosophical Research Society

Programmer Gregorio Davila presents a program of rarely-seen LGBT films from the 1960's & 70's from local Los Angeles filmmakers Matt Spero, Pat Rocco and Richard Jay Silverthorn! See a slice of the city's queer (and cinematic) history in this historic library.

Welcome to the West Coast Underground

Feb 17, 7:30pm - Academy Museum

The Academy Museum expands their "Outside the Mainstream" exhibit with this all 16mm screening of bold voices in 1960s and 1970s underground cinema on the West Coast. Included in tonight's program are films by queer trailblazers Barbara Hammer, Curt McDowell, and more.

Cabaret

Feb 26 & 27, 7pm - Vista Theater

Bob Fosse's film adaptation of the Broadway show, which went on to win 8 Academy Awards, comes to the Vista's festival of Technicolor prints. Showtunes, Liza Minelli, the rise of the Nazis, and forward (for 70's Hollywood) depiction of bisexuality make Cabaret a classic.
