Hello world.

Welcome to Queer Cinema LA. This is a new project to find and promote all the great Queer cinema you can see in Los Angeles. We want to filmmakers to have their work seen, audiences to find films that inspire them, and venues to know that Queer people support Queer cinema.

Our definition of Queer cinema is helpfully vague, in order to capture everything from queer classics, to movies by LGBTQ+ filmmakers, to camp classics and experimental cinema.

Broken Embraces (2009)

Jan 5, 10pm - Los Feliz 3

American Cinematheque's celebrates Mexican Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, who had a banner year as DP for both Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon. Prieto was nominated for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain, and then went on to collaborate with out director Pedro Almodóvar on Broken Embraces. It's not Almodóvar's first film to be about an actress, or to star Penelope Cruz, or to deal with themes of love and illness--but every Almodóvar film is a gem.

Giant (1956)

Jan 6 & 7, 6:30pm - The New Beverly

The last film James Dean made before his untimely death, this lavish Technicolor epic is packed with queer icons. Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and Sal Mineo co-star in this frontier saga following a generation of cattle ranchers and oilmen in Texas.

All of Us Strangers

Andrew Haigh, the writer/director behind Weekend and HBO's Looking, makes another aching gay romance. Out actor Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Fleabag) stars as Adam, a writer who visits the ghosts of his parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy) while romancing his neighbor (Paul Mescal).

2023 Project Involve Short Films

Project Involve is Film Independent's artist development program for filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds. Every year a new cohort of fellows come together to develop short films that showcase their talents. Join this free screening to see the shorts produced this year.

Sneak Preview: Housekeeping for Beginners

Jan 13, 7pm - Los Feliz 3

Join director Goran Stolevski (2022's romantic hit Of An Age) for a sneak preview of his latest film Housekeeping for Beginners, which won the Queer Lion at Venice in 2023. This is a sneak preview screening, RSVPs are free but do not guarantee a seat -- arrive early.
