Week of Jun 24

It's a very busy week for Queer cinema in LA, and an even busier week for film critic, writer, and podcaster Alonso Duralde! Alonso's new book is Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film, a history of Queer cinema from Edison's laboratory through to the present.

First up, The Egyptian hosts the Queer Lives on the Silver Screen series June 25-27, a selection of Queer film co-programmed by Alonso--culminating in a free preview screening of Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution. Films include:

  • Pillow Talk
  • Suddenly, Last Summer
  • All About Eve (with Hollywood Pride book signing)
  • Spa Night
  • Bound (introduced by Trish Bendix)
  • The Old Dark House (introduced by Brian Fuller)

Then, Alonso hosts a special Q&A with Gregg Araki at the Academy Museum's presentation of The Living End on June 27. This explosive milestone of New Queer Cinema is like no other: sad and angry and punk rock and saturated with deep cut cinephile references.

If you need more Araki movies in your life, Kaboom screens at the New Beverly June 29 at midnight.

OUTFEST at Dances with Films

Jun 27 @ TCL Chinese Theater

While LA's premiere Queer film festival is on hiatus this year, they're making a brief appearance at this Dances With Films with three partner programs.

Two Queer short film programs, one documentary and one narrative, showcase emerging filmmakers and new visions. Following these is the world premiere of Regarding Us, a new film from David Beck and Jennifer Bobbi.

After losing her teaching career in the Catholic school system, a transgender woman has a profound impact on the lives of two children–one with two fathers in marital strife, and the other a recent transplant from a conservative household. When the children form a unique bond, new questions and old prejudices erupt.
