La Ronde, the classic sexual merry-go-round, is updated to the age of AIDS by Themistocles Lopez and given a gay perspective that results in a sexy, funny, and hauntingly civilized film that does Schnitzler proud. Here, in contemporary New York, it is chanteuse meets pious workman meets wife meets doctor meets maid meets writer meets young hustler meets social worker meets dancer, etc. With Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) as an avid chicken-hawk.

Already being touted as an Italian Almodovar, director Pappi Corsicato’s exotic extravaganza is a quasi-surreal portrait of three Neapolitan women. The second of the stories has the film’s most overtly gay theme in which Carmela’s handsome homosexual son discovers his “mother” is more than he ever dreamed. A visual delight, shot through with a bizarre sense of humor and decor, director Corsicato is a talent to discover and to watch.
