At the Palace Theater in 1967 San Francisco, a bunch of hippies kicked up their heels to a Rolling Stones song and wowed the crowd with their mix of flamboyant garb, nudity, and gender ambiguity. The Cockettes went on to make an indelible mark on popular culture.

Set in 1988 Beijing in the months leading up to the Tiananmen Square disaster, this film tells the story of Chen Handong, a successful middle-aged businessman with deep Communist party connections, who falls passionately in love with Lan Yu, a boy from the countryside. The two men gradually become lovers, but their relationship is shattered by Handong’s infidelity.

A love story between a country boy in Beijing to study and a wealthy businessman set against the backdrop of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident.
