Wicked Queer Jury Awards 2021

Selected for Jury Award, Narrative: NINA WU

“On behalf of Wicked Queer 2021, we are pleased to present the Jury Award for Narrative Feature Film to Nina Wu. Nina Wu is a bold experimental narrative with a strong vision that blends reality, cinema, and traumatic memories. It’s an urgent statement on the film industry’s abusive practices, and a powerful indictment of sexual assault in the era of #MeToo.” - WQ 2021 Jury

Selected for Special Mention, Narrative: SEE YOU THEN

“On behalf of Wicked Queer 2021, we are pleased to recognize See You Then as the special mention for Narrative Feature Film. See You Then is an intimate and beautifully crafted film that deftly tackles the complexities of transgender experiences, including the lifesaving impact of transitioning. We recognize its boldness in depicting complicated transgender characters, which serves to further humanize the trans experience.” - WQ 2021 Jury

Selected for Jury Award, Documentary: NO ORDINARY MAN

“On behalf of Wicked Queer 2021, we are pleased to present the Jury Award for Documentary Feature Film to No Ordinary Man. We were inspired by the innovative and absorbing film-within-a-film structure to re-explore the legacy of jazz musician and trans icon Billy Tipton, and the deeply collaborative approach to connecting one man’s story to the history of transgender lives and experience. Through archival footage, present-day interviews with Tipton’s son, Billy Jr., and a nuanced blending of analysis and personal reflection from trans artists, activists and academics, the film unpacks complex questions of history and identity with immediacy and breathtaking empathy. We honor No Ordinary Man’s artistry, dynamic execution, and noble act of reclaiming history.” - WQ 2021 Jury

Selected for Special Mention, Documentary: KEYBOARD FANTASIES

“On behalf of Wicked Queer 2021, we are pleased to Keyboard Fantasies: The Beverly Glenn-Copeland Story as the special mention for Documentary Feature Film. A tender, sweet documentary with an utterly inspirational protagonist. The film shows compassion, trusting the now and having strong faith and determination despite the question of gender identity or sexuality in past, present or future. Life is a continuous process of learning. Keyboard Fantasies is a great addition to queer history archiving, and Beverly Glenn-Copeland certainly is a much needed role-model and personality that inspires many generations.” - WQ 2021 Jury
