Star Robert Stevens (aka Angel Benton) in person
This sweet and hilarious film takes whimsical liberties with the real-life experience of Robert Stephens (a.k.a. Angel Benton), a gay, cross-dressing Britney Spears impersonator and fan who won the opportunity to meet his idol in a look-alike contest. When a TV crew mistook Robert’s drag-self for the real deal, Britney’s publicists angrily threw him out. Using this true incident as its premise, Britney, Baby… tells the fictional story of director Dude Schmitz (played by regional filmmaker Mark Borchardt, subject of the documentary American Movie), who fails to get an interview with the pop star for a local news station. Dude convinces Robert, playing himself, to travel with him to Britney’s next tour stop. Good-natured Robert delights Britney fans in malls along the way, unaware that Dude is sending footage of him back to the station and pawning it off as a behind-the-scenes exclusive. A Sundance Film Festival favorite.
Dude Schmitz, an independent filmmaker, attempting to secure funds for his second feature, blows an opportunity at what promises to be a lucrative interview with pop sensation Britney Spears. Dejected, Schmitz discovers Robert Stephens, a young, gay Britney impersonator. Schmitz takes off for New Orleans with Stephens, promising him a chance to meet his teen idol, all the while taking film of Stephens’ cross-country exploits and pawning them off as footage of the real deal.
