Join filmmakers, artists, and community activists to discuss trans representation in contemporary media. Saturday, May 4th, 4:00 pm Bright Family Screening Room, Emerson College This panel will look to address the following questions: What is the concept of representation? Who controls the representation? How are stories being told that appropriately display these ideas and concepts? In our years of programming LGBT film we’ve seen the same old same old regarding transgender representation, narrative, etc. and we’d like this panel unpack that. The majority of these narratives aren’t written by members of the trans community and so where is the control? Who tells these stories and for whom? Confirmed panelist are: Dan Hunt. Director of MR ANGEL (2013 Fest), BEAR RUN (2008) Caleb Cole. Artist. Michelle Figueiredo. Michelle is an IS OPS and Business Transformation Senior Associate at State Street Corporation, where she is the only known transgender employee and the only known person to transition on the job in the company worldwide. Jack is a surrogate father to his deceased brother's daughter Tara. He picks her up from school, helps with homework, and is there for the occasional Emergency Room visit. But then Jack is informed his work visa will not be renewed. Desperate to stay he marries his lesbian friend Ali. The parallel stories of two gay men in a small Texas town. There’s Gabe: a contractor who’s getting over an ill‐fated affair with a married man and finds solace in the relationship he still harbors with his ex‐wife, Shannon, and their daughter, Cindy; and there’s Ernesto: a Hispanic lumber yard worker in the midst of splitting up with his live‐in boyfriend, Luis, as he receives news from the hospital that his former love, Martin, is in a coma. At the end, when Gabe and Ernesto meet each other for a one‐nighter–having endured all the struggles and heartbreaks and wondering if they’ll ever find love again–they face the possibility that they might just be meant for each other.
