Join filmmakers, artists, and community activists to discuss trans representation in contemporary media. Saturday, May 4th, 4:00 pm Bright Family Screening Room, Emerson College This panel will look to address the following questions: What is the concept of representation? Who controls the representation? How are stories being told that appropriately display these ideas and concepts? In our years of programming LGBT film we’ve seen the same old same old regarding transgender representation, narrative, etc. and we’d like this panel unpack that. The majority of these narratives aren’t written by members of the trans community and so where is the control? Who tells these stories and for whom? Confirmed panelist are: Dan Hunt. Director of MR ANGEL (2013 Fest), BEAR RUN (2008) Caleb Cole. Artist. Michelle Figueiredo. Michelle is an IS OPS and Business Transformation Senior Associate at State Street Corporation, where she is the only known transgender employee and the only known person to transition on the job in the company worldwide. MY OTHER ME is a documentary that chronicles a year in the life of three different cosplayers: a veteran cosplayer whom launched a career from cosplay, a young fourteen year old first timer, and a trans person whom found himself through cosplay. The documentary will cover everything from each different cosplayers home life, to their costume process, their journey through the convention circuit, and the profound effect cosplay is making on each of their lives as it grows with them. Nimer, a Palestinian student and dedicated son, dreams of studying abroad and of a better life. One fateful night he meets Roy, an Israeli lawyer, and the two fall in love. As their relationship deepens, Nimer is confronted with the harsh realities of a Palestinian society that refuses to accept him for his sexual identity, and an Israeli society that rejects him for his Palestinian nationality. When his close friend is caught hiding illegally in Tel Aviv and sent back to the West Bank to be brutally murdered, Nimer is sent hurling down a path of personal sacrifice and mortal danger. Now he must choose between the life he thought he wanted and his love for Roy.
