CONTENT WARNING:
Casey has rejected her privileged upbringing and restores old boats for a living. She lives a cozy life with her beautiful social worker girlfriend Alex until her stuffy family demands that she come home for Christmas – without Alex. Casey is a longshorewoman who seems to have everything she wants; she and her girlfriend Alex are very much in love. But there’s nothing like the holidays to bring out the drama of the average family. Casey lives just across the bay from her upper crust New England family. The proximity seems no accident: Casey can’t quite let go, despite her family’s judgmental and inescapable hold on her otherwise independent and unconventional life. When the family reunites for Christmas, the unwrapping of presents takes a back seat to the unraveling of emotions.
This film is presented in English with English subtitles.
This earnest film evokes coastal New England in winter as Casey Olsen, a Massachusetts woman shaking off upper-crust expectations to try commercial fishing, and her long-time lover Alex, a social worker, struggle to reconcile their relationship with Casey’s conservative parents.

Director and star Helen Lesnick, coproducer Valerie Pichney in person
Struggling freelance writer Rachel Rosen flees New York City after another traumatic breakup with her capricious girlfriend Reggie and arrives at her parents’ home in San Diego, where she is greeted by her PFLAG mom who just wants to see her daughter settle down with a nice girl. Rachel reluctantly allows her mother to set her up with Christine, by all appearances a typical California girl. Soon, Rachel and Christine are moving in together. But, Rachel’s friends and family fear that she will ruin the relationship, knowing that Rachel still has feelings for her ex-girlfriend. Daily Variety calls Lesnick a “budding talent,” and describes the film as a “Woody Allen trifecta reconfigured into sharp-witted lesbian comedy.”
Rachel flees NYC after another traumatic breakup and arrives at her parents’ home in San Diego. They are adamant to see their wayward daughter settle down with a nice girl. Rachel goes on several blind dates that misfire badly. She finally lets her mother set her up with Christine, a typical Californian girl. Much to Rachel’s chagrin, mom is right! Meanwhile, Rachel’s friends wait for her to screw up the relationship. They know, even if she won’t admit it, that she still carries a torch for her ex-girlfriend and they’re not sure what would happen if she reappeared to reclaim Rachel.
